Yes its a Rock | But; Gibraltar is home to a wealth of plant life - palms and jacaranda, lavender and jasmine, clematis, honeysuckle, geraniums and bougainvillaea live side by side with many rarer species including two, Gibraltar Candytuft and Gibraltar Sea Lavender, named after the Rock itself.  Sail into the bay and, more often than not, your boat will be followed by flying fish and schools of leaping dolphin.

The Rock of Gibraltar is if course the most iconic image known of Gibraltar. This peninsular has a mixed heritage, from early Neanderthal settlements to Phoenicians around 950 BC, semi-permanent settlements later established by the Carthaginians and Romans. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Gibraltar came briefly under the control of the Vandals, and would late form part of the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania until its collapse due to the Muslim conquest in 711 AD.

The current name of Gibraltar is a Spanish corruption of the original Arabic name Jabal Ţāriq (جبل طارق), meaning "mountain of Tariq".  Today, Gibraltar is known colloquially as "Gib" or "the Rock".

Gibraltars' most famous inhabitants live in a den high on the Rock of Gibraltar - The Barbary Apes, the only wild primates in all Europe.  Friendly, charming and inquisitive, the apes have lived on the Rock for centuries. Legend says that when the apes leave, Gibraltar will cease to be British.

Gibraltar's burgeoning financial services sector dates back to the enactment of the Companies (Taxation and Concessions) Ordinance in 1967, which made provision for a special tax regime for international business.  The industry has made great strides since those early days, and now includes a broad spectrum of professional services, ranging from private banking to captive insurance management.

Such is the reputation that Gibraltar has acquired in recent years that it is increasingly being referred to as a regulatory benchmark for other jurisdictions.  In fact, the Edwards report (commissioned by the UK in 1998 to review regulatory practices in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) used Gibraltar as a point of comparison when making recommendations for other centres.

Such a reputation needs to be kept up and this can be only be done with a strong industry.  there are many parts that go into this.  WebNet has recognised that the Gibraltar domain .gi is not on many people's search list.  This is why we have added Gibraltar to the WebNet to aid the Internet advertising and help the domains which would otherwise be unknown to the rest of the world.
